Year 11 Agriculture Farm Visit

Year 11 Agriculture Farm Visit

Mr Geoff Rodgers and Mrs Elizabeth Rodgers of Rodgers Livestock, Ballynahinch hosted a farm visit on Monday 26th March for Year 11 Agriculture and Land Use GCSE students from Saintfield High School. They were accompanied by their teacher Mrs Lynda Jackson. The Rodgers farm is currently being filmed by the BBC series ‘This Farming Life’ to be aired in the Autumn. The film crew followed the pupils on their visit. The tour of the farm proved to be a great learning experience for the pupils as they were able to see at first hand the different breeds of continental beef cattle reared on the farm. The quality of the nutritional feed was explained in detail by Mr Paul Sloan nutritionist of Tullyherron feeds. The benefits of this were evident by the excellent quality of the prize winning animals. In the various pens pupils were able to see the progression from birth to fully sized animals. Animal welfare, husbandry and the breeding programmes on the farm were discussed. Pupils were invited to guess the weight of a heifer and it was explained where the well-known ‘cuts’ of meat would be located on the animal. Throughout the visit the pupils were encouraged to ask questions to improve their knowledge of the beef cattle industry. The class were then taken to the site of the turbine that has been installed on the Rodgers farm. Mr Patrick Flynn of Green Energy explained the benefits of harnessing wind energy to generate electricity and how the use of renewable energy such as wind turbines is a way that many farmers have diversified. The pupils remarked how quiet the wind turbines were up close. The educational tour concluded with very enjoyable ‘home grown’ beef burgers and sausages expertly cooked by Mrs Rodgers (senior). A few of the pupils were then selected by the film crew to give their views on the very beneficial farm visit.
