Careers education

Mrs A Dempsey           Head of Careers

The Careers Department in Saintfield High School is a busy and forward looking department. The Head of Department is Mrs Amanda Dempsey, who together with the school Careers Team aim to complement pupils’ studies by helping to equip them with the skills, knowledge, confidence and decision-making strategies that will help them as individuals to make choices and transitions appropriate to their individual circumstances and to succeed in an ever changing world of work.

The school provides careers guidance in a number of different ways, both at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.  At Key Stage 4 pupils have timetabled careers periods in which they are introduced to life in the workplace and the skills they will need to develop.  A series of mock interviews is arranged with local employers, giving pupils an opportunity to see what they may expect when they are looking for a job after leaving school.  A work experience programme is also in place, in which pupils get a taste of life in the workplace, by spending a week with an employer of their choice.  In addition to these arrangements, pupils also have the benefit of hearing visiting speakers give talks in school on employment and employability issues, and of making visits to different industrial or commercial concerns to see how businesses operate.

The Careers guidance offered in the school is intended to be both informative and enjoyable, and to ensure that pupils are given a wide understanding of the various employment opportunities available to them after they leave school, and to select a career path which makes best use of their individual skills.
